My Bible Journey

Here are a few nuggets of truth from my Bible reading the past few weeks (in the New Living Translation):

Acts 13:22-23 – OBEDIENCE is huge! God draws a contrast between King Saul & David, saying of David: “…he will do everything I want him to”. Obedience is HUGE!

Acts 14:11-20 – People are fickle.

Acts 14:21 – Sometimes it takes GUTS to serve God.

Acts 14:19-20, 16:1 – Paul’s place of great pain (stoning), became a place of great gain (Timothy). It can be true for you too!

Exodus 1:8-21 – Fear of others and a lack of knowledge drives people to mistreat others. Fear of God leads to blessing.

Exodus 14 – God can make a way where there seems to be no way.

Acts 16:25-30 – There is power in PRAISE!

Matthew 16:24 – Jesus: “…If any of you wants to be my follower, you must put aside your selfish ambition, shoulder your cross, and follow me.”

Psalm 37:23 – “The steps of the godly are directed by the LORD. He delights in every detail of their lives.”

Psalm 37:30 – “The godly offer good counsel; they know what is right from wrong.”

Psalm 37:34 – Don’t be impatient for the LORD to act! Travel steadily along his path.”

I would enjoy hearing what you are gleaning from your Bible reading.

Please comment on Acts 14:19. what does this mean and how to I apply this to my life?

Something that is important when we read the Bible is context, to read a verse or passage in light of other Scripture. With that in mind, I would encourage you to read beyond just Acts 14:19 before thinking about application. I used that as a summary point from my broader reading.

While reading through Acts 14-16, it caught my attention that the town of Lystra was the place where Paul was stoned and left for dead (Acts 14:29-30), a very painful experience to be sure. Then in Acts 16:1 it stood out to me that he was returning to Lystra. It was there, in that place where he had experienced great pain, that he met Timothy. According to other passages of Scripture (1 & 2 Timothy, Phil. 3) Timothy went on to serve in ministry with Paul like a son with a father. He was a great blessing to Paul for the rest of his life.

That stood out to me as an example of the truth found in Romans 8:28-29, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.” God has a way of working “all things” (good, bad and sometimes even the painful and ugly experiences of life) for our good. As a follower of Jesus, I can be confident He can take every experience in my life and work it for my good and His glory, so that I am being conformed to the image of Christ.

If Paul had not gone to Lystra the first time, he would have had no reason to go there the second time, when he met Timothy. God brought great gain for Paul out of the place of his great pain. He can take the painful experiences you or I may be experiencing and turn them around and use them for our good and His glory, conforming us to the image of His Son.

I hope that helps clarify for you.
